Definition

What is interim management?

Interim management is the short-term appointment of an experienced senior executive to lead a business through a vacancy, crisis or transition.

Unlike a consultant, an Octobiz interim manager takes line responsibility from day one, delivers a defined mandate and then hands over to a permanent successor.

Stage 2 · Rescue execution

Four modules, booked as you need them

Billed monthly in advance, with a minimum term of three months and 30 days’ notice to month end after that.

Execution can follow our own rescue plan or a plan you already have.

Interim executive

A partner takes the leadership role, standard as CRO with power of attorney, or as interim CEO or COO. Full time or three days a week.

Transformation office

Program management, measure tracking and steering of all workstreams, sized to the team you need.

Rescue Monitor

AI-based 13-week cash monitoring, a KPI dashboard, early-warning signals and a monthly report to board and lenders. Also available after the interim mandate ends.

Performance component

Linked to a standstill, a refinancing, a cash target or an EBITDA improvement. Preferably paid by the sponsor.

Our standard is a mandate as chief restructuring officer (CRO) with power of attorney, without a formal board appointment. Where a formal appointment as managing director or board member is needed, we agree it as an exception, with D&O cover provided by the client, an indemnity and an immediate right to step down.

Interim management across our core sectors

Sector
Typical challenges
Our measure

Construction

Typical challenges

Cost overrun and liquidity squeeze. Material and subcontractor costs outrun the budget while payment milestones slip, and cash runs short mid-project.

Key executive departure mid-project. A COO or project director leaves at a critical stage, and banks, clients and crews lose their point of control.

Our measureWe take control of project-level cash within the first week, recover claims and change orders, and put an interim COO or chief restructuring officer on site to deliver a recovery plan the financing bank can accept.

Civil Engineering

Typical challenges

Fixed prices, rising inputs. Long public contracts were priced before steel, energy and labor costs moved, and every month of delay erodes the margin.

Working capital locked in retentions. Delayed acceptance, retentions and disputed variations tie up cash while bonding lines tighten.

Our measureWe review every contract for margin and claims, prepare the negotiation with clients and surety providers, and release working capital from retentions and open variations in a structured sequence.

Real Estate

Typical challenges

Overleveraged portfolio. Falling valuations and higher interest rates push loan-to-value ratios toward covenant limits.

Stalled development project. Construction stops over cost or financing gaps, and the asset ties up capital without generating income.

Our measureWe act as restructuring advisor or interim development manager, prepare the standstill with lenders, and build a completion, repositioning or exit roadmap that lenders and investors can support.

Manufacturing

Typical challenges

Margin erosion. Energy, labor and material costs rise faster than prices can follow, and contribution margins shrink quarter by quarter.

Supply chain disruption. A key supplier fails or input prices jump, and delivery commitments and customer penalty clauses come under threat.

Our measureWe put an interim COO in charge of operations, secure alternative sourcing, and launch a 90-day cost program on overhead, energy and working capital, with every measure tracked against cash and EBITDA.

Hospitality & Tourism

Typical challenges

Seasonal cash flow strain. Off-season revenue gaps stretch working capital while staff, lease and loan commitments run all year.

Leadership gap before peak season. A general manager leaves ahead of the season, and service standards and revenue targets are at risk.

Our measureWe deploy an interim general manager or COO, build a seasonal liquidity plan, renegotiate seasonal financing and repurpose underused space so the property earns in the low season too.

Technology

Typical challenges

Burn rate crisis. Spending outpaces revenue growth, the runway shortens, and the next funding round is uncertain.

Founder exit during scaling. The founder steps back just as the company scales, leaving gaps in leadership, product direction and investor relations.

Our measureWe place an interim CEO who resets the cost base to the real runway, refocuses the roadmap on revenue and keeps investors on board through structured, regular reporting.
