Definition

What is interim management?

Interim management is the temporary appointment of an experienced executive to lead a business or function for a defined period.

In Germany the interim manager is typically self-employed and engaged through a provider, a network or a consultancy that manages the mandate. For the wider picture, see our overview of interim management.

Situations

When German companies use an interim manager

Most mandates start with a problem that cannot wait for a six-month search.

A sudden vacancy

The Geschäftsführer resigns or falls ill, and nobody inside can step in.

A crisis or turnaround

Liquidity is tight, lenders ask hard questions, and someone with authority must act. See turnaround management in Germany.

Post-acquisition integration

A new owner needs a leader it trusts while two businesses come together.

Transformation or carve-out

A project needs dedicated senior leadership for six to twelve months.

Investor oversight

A private equity owner needs a hands-on operator inside a portfolio company.

The mix of mandates is shifting. In DDIM’s 2026 market study, the automotive supplier sector’s share of mandates fell from 11.6% to 7.9%, dropping from first place to fourth (DDIM, February 20, 2026).

Set-up

Setting up an interim mandate in Germany

A few practical questions are easier to plan at the start than to fix halfway through.

Language and reporting

A German team usually expects to be led in German, while investors may want English reporting. We work in both.

Who contracts the manager

Either the client contracts the manager directly, or the provider holds the contract and invoices. Agree which in writing.

Self-employed status

Authorities check whether a self-employed manager is genuinely independent (Scheinselbstständigkeit). A defined scope and end date and no employee-style instructions help.

Appointment as Geschäftsführer

A managing director without shares is generally treated as an employee for social security. The Clearingstelle of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund can issue a binding status decision, and the appointment must be registered in the Handelsregister via a notary. Our standard is therefore a CRO mandate with power of attorney.

General information, not legal or tax advice. Take advice from a German employment or tax adviser on your specific mandate.

Fees

What does interim management cost in Germany?

Affordability depends more on the fee model than the headline rate. You will usually meet a provider margin on the manager’s day rate, fixed-fee consulting phases, or a performance component.

At Octobiz: Fixed fee to start. Performance-linked fees for execution. Interim mandates are billed monthly in advance, with an optional performance component, preferably paid by the sponsor.

FAQ

Interim management Germany: FAQ

What are the best interim management consulting providers for Germany?

There is no official ranking. Buyers compare track record in similar mandates, speed to start, membership of bodies such as DDIM or AIMP, and whether the provider only places a manager or takes responsibility for results. Octobiz combines interim leadership and restructuring consulting in one mandate.

Which providers combine interim management and consulting?

Many German providers only place the manager. Octobiz takes operational responsibility itself: A scan within 3 working days, a fixed-fee rescue plan in about three weeks, then implementation with an interim executive where needed.

What should German companies check before hiring an interim manager?

The rules on self-employed status and, if the manager becomes Geschäftsführer, a status decision and registration in the commercial register. Octobiz manages the assignment; legal and tax steps need your own advisers.

How is the interim market developing in 2026?

Stable. In a DDIM flash survey at the end of August 2026, 68.7% of members were on a mandate and 41.9% rated the market’s development since January positively.

Can an interim manager lead in German?

Yes. Our partners lead in German or English, and reporting to shareholders and lenders can be in either language.
